Foam fire extinguishers are traditionally used for tackling fires involving flammable liquids (Class B) as well as solid combustible materials (Class A). They work by forming a blanket over the fire surface, helping to cool flames and suppress vapours.

Why it works: foam spreads across burning liquids, sealing the surface and reducing the release of flammable vapours while also providing a cooling effect.

⚠️ Important considerations

Many traditional foam extinguishers contain PFAS “forever chemicals”, which are being phased out across the UK and Europe due to environmental and health concerns. Even newer fluorine-free foams still require specialist disposal and are not considered truly “green” when end-of-life is taken into account.
